So, you just got or built a new computer with the brand new and slick Windows 7, but can't seem to get Lock:On Flaming Cliffs to work correctly. As with Windows Vista, there are a few short hurdles that must be overcome with regards to the Starforce protection and sound issues.

Fix #1: Starforce (Make sure you run EVERYTHING as an administrator!)

1. Install Lockon 1.0

2. Install Flaming Cliffs

3. Install Patch 1.12b for "LockOn 1.1: Flaming Cliffs" simulator

4. Start Lockon and reboot when instructed. After rebooting, ignore the message that the Starforce driver is disabled.

5. Install the Starforce Update

6. Reboot

Fix #2: LockOn Sound

After you install Windows 7, your sound will work, but it is using a Microsoft driver during the install. Download the Realtek Driver for Vista/Windows7 from the Realtek site by clicking on their "HD Audio Codecs" to download.

REALTEK DOWNLOAD

Download both the Windows 7 driver at the top and the 3D Sound Back files.
1st-Install the Windows 7 Realtek HD Audio drivers for your systems sound card and reboot the computer.
2nd-unpack the 3D Sound Back zip file.
3rd-Open the 3D Sound Back folder you unpacked and right click the SETUP.EXE file and click both "Run as Administrator" and "Run this program in Compatibility Mode for WINDOWS VISTA (SP2) "
4th-Click the setup.exe and install the 3D SoundBack program.
5th-Go to your Windows 7 Program Files folder, and find the Realtek\ 3D Sound Back folder and open it. Right click the "3DSoundBack.exe" file and click both "Run as Administrator" and "Run this program in Compatibility Mode for WINDOWS VISTA (SP2) " once more.
6th-click Apply and then Double Click the 3DSoundback.exe file to open the program. Now your 3D SoundBack program from realtek opens up, Click ADD GAME on the right-side and add the path to your "Lock On" Folder (in my case it was C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Eagle Dynamics\Lock On), the entry will be added in the window, but you need to highlight it and then click ENABLE and click OK to close the window.

7th-Now, as before with Vista, to avoid the loud afterburner in-game sounds, you must edit your Plane.cfg file (located in the LockON\Sounds folder) as before with Vista and Windows 7 now and make it look like this:

EngineAfterburnerSound = false;
EngineFrontSound = true;
EngineBackSound = true;
EngineAroundSound = true;
WindSound = false;
DistortionSound = false;
CockpitSystemsSound = true;
CockpitAfterburnerSound = true;

Then do a FILE, SAVE to save this Plane.cfg file as edited and close it.

--------------

Hopefully these steps work for you like they have for me! Lockon runs great on Windows 7, and I think Microsoft has finally figured out how to build a good OS!

Great post, Rhino. Smile

Im thinking about to switch soon to W7 as well.
I got an Creative Soundcard. Do i still need to install the driver, you posted?
Or should i install your driver first, and then the one from the creative soundcard?

Maybe you could give me some advise. Smile

Yep, if you search the Creative website, you should find something there. I will probably add a post on here on how to do it with Creative cards, but I did the Realtek one since the need for add-on sound cards has really gone out the window anymore with the advent of really good onboard audio.

Yesterday, i installed on my 2nd HD Windows 7.

Compared to the FPS Rate in XP, i have a 20 - 30 fps drop in average.
I use onboard sound from realtek and also installed the 3D Sound Back files.

Graphic settings and LO settings are equal from XP.

I noticed, that W7 needs more performance to be running, but before, i used XP 32 and could only use 3.25 GB ram. Now, im running W7 64 and have round about some amount of ram for performance.
Also, when i run LO, i disabled the aero designs from the deskop, cause these transparent windows also take performance.

Maybe someone an idea, why W7 gives less FPS?

For a couple of reasons really.

Compared to WinXP, the operating system of choice when Lockon came out, Windows 7 uses a lot of horsepower to drive things like aero, indexer, sidebar, etc. etc. Unless you set your windows preferences to best performance, which disables all the bells and whistles your not going to get your best frames in any games. You can do this by right clicking on "Computer" in the start menu> Properties> Advanced System Settings > Advanced Tab > Settings and selecting "Adjust for best performance."

Also remember when Lockon was released it was optimized to take advantage of the technology of the time. Believe it or not, a more advanced operating system and hardware can actually hurt the game. An example of this is the game not being able to take advantage of multi-core processors stably.

Really though as long as you are getting >30 FPS consistently, your fine. If movies and television is smooth to your eye and those happen at either 24 FPS or 29.92 FPS, anything better than 30 is more than enough in game.

Sawa, if its any help, since you have a 64bit system, you might try more ram. I'm at 8GB and this thing screams. I do notice though, while sitting here typing this, that without anything really running, my processor (2.66 C2Quad) is at 3% usage, while the RAM is at 24% usage, which is in essence 2 GB of ram. Assuming your computer uses 2GB of ram not doing anything, you'd only have 1.25GB of RAM for Lockon, which isn't getting the job done. LockOn is bottlenecked with processor speed and RAM, as even if you had a 7 series nVidia card you could run everything maxed out. Something to think about.
